Sarcasm

It appears a tiny (see, I'm doing it again) clarification is needed regarding my post of September 30.

Sarcasm is stating the opposite of an intended meaning especially in order to sneeringly, slyly, jest or mock a person, situation or thing. It is strongly associated with irony, with some definitions classifying it as a type of verbal irony intended to insult or wound. Sarcasm can also be used in a humorous or jesting way depending on the intent of the person speaking.

Sarcasm is often used as a form of humor and of emotional expression.

Sarcasm can be difficult to grasp in written form. To prevent this some people emphasise (often overly) the sarcastic comment. (e.g. that’s just craptastic!); sarcastic comments on the Internet with an emoticon, such as ^o); or surround them with a made-up language tag, e.g. *sarcasm*,[sarcasm][/sarcasm]

"Sarcasm" appeared in English in 1579, from Late Latin "sarcasmos," in turn from Hellenistic or Medieval Greek "sarkasmos," and ancient Greek σαρκάζω (sarkazo, meaning 'to tear flesh'). (In ancient Greek the word for this idea was instead χλευασμός). Irony is closely associated with sarcasm, although Socrates, considered the father of dissembling irony, was not sarcastic. Sarcasm is frequently referred to as the "lowest form of wit" (a partial mis-quote from Oscar Wilde, the quote in its entirety being "Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, but the highest form of intelligence").

I'm rather certain that I am NOT the winner of the Malaysian lottery.

It was a joke, dripping with sarcasm, as is so much I write and say and do. I don't recommend you send a blank check or all your bank account info to anyone, unless it's me of course. And then I can assure you it will be put to very good use here on The Avenue.

So please Gomer, and all the rest of you Gomers, do NOT email me privately seeking advice about what to do with this very same email YOU received and how you think it's real. You're scaring the pants off me!

P.S. A shameless plug.....it's birthday week here on The Avenue. Mine being Wednesday the 8th and Glitter Gurl's on Wednesday the 15th. Hey if I don't tell ya, who will? Anywhoo, in honor of the birthdays and because I am THE QUEEN attention seeker, I am sponsoring a give away. On my birthday post Wednesday if I reach 100 comments I will pull out the old random number generator and send the winner some honest to goodness scratch off lottery tickets. Open only to US residents over the age of 18 and whatever other disclaimers I need to add to that. They have to be real comments, one letter comments and duplicates won't count as more than one entry. Hey you gotta work for it here on The Avenue.

So go now and come back Wednesday with your comments, you might want to practice and leave some love now. Leave a blurb on your blog and get your friends to come back and wish me a Happy Birthday!
