Crocheted Frog Hat Directions

I've recently picked up my crochet hooks after an almost 20 year hiatus and I've been making hats like a wild woman. GlitterGurl asked me to make a frog hat for her bff's baby shower and I couldn't find one that was as cute as I wanted. So I looked at about 4 different ones on Etsy and Pinterest and combined the features I liked best to make the cutie pie below

I usually crochet by sight and this is my first attempt at writing the directions down legibly, so that someone other than myself can actually read them. Please bear with me. If they don't make sense, I'll try to clarify if you just ask.

Hat

Directions are written with dc, but you can use 1/2 dc for a tighter stitch. Use an F or G hook. To make sure the hat fits your little one, measure around head and divide by 3.14 That's the diameter your hat should measure after round 5.

With green yarn chain 4, join with slipstitch

ch 2, 11 dc in ring. join to top of ch 2 (12 sts)

ch2, dc in same dc as ch 2.  2dc in each dc (24 st) join every round

ch 2, dc in same dc as ch 2. (2dc in next dc, dc in next dc) around (36 sts)

ch2, dc in same dc as ch 2 (2dc in next st, dc in next two sts) around (48 sts)

ch2, dc in same dc as ch 2 (2dc in next st, dc in next three sts) around (60 sts)

ch 2,
dc in same st, dc all the way around. (60 sts each row) Continue 9 rows of dc are done, OR until hat is desired height

Optional: Single crochet one row around bottom with contrasting color

Cheeks (make 2)

Chain 4, join with slipstitch

ch 2, 9 sc in ring. join to top of ch 2 (10 sts)

ch2, sc in same sc as ch 2.  2sc in each sc (20 st)

leave a long tail of yarn for
sewing to hat (about 8")

Eyes (make 2)

With black yarn Chain 4, join with slipstitch

With white yarn
ch2. sc in same sc as ch 2.  2sc in each sc (20 st)

L
eave a long tail of yarn for sewing to hat (about 8")

Tongue (make 1)

Using pink yarn, leave a small tail (used to secure fly) ch 14, sc in second chain from hook and in each chain. (12 st)

ch 2, sc in 2nd sc from hook and then in each sc (11 sc after ch 2, 12 st across.

Leave a tail for sewing to hat

With black yarn twist a little bit to make a fly.

Place fly on tip of tongue (where the small tail from your starting point is) and roll up slightly. Use that short length of yarn to sew the fly to the curl and to keep the curl from unrolling.

Mouth (make 1)

Using black yarn, make a double foundation chain (http://crochethub.com/2007/09/21/double-foundation-chain/) about 5" long

Pin all parts onto hat, tongue under mouth and mouth under cheeks. When sewing the eyes on, only sew the bottom to the hat, then take your green yarn and single crochet around one eye, joining in the middle of the two eyes and around other eye.

2nd Annual #InappropriateElf on a Shelf Contest

He's baaaaaack!

That creepy little mischievous elf we call Tank.

Oh he's all G-rated fun and games when the boys are here.

But when they head home. . . well let's just say Tank is a wild and crazy guy!

Last year, we caught Tank trying to hitch a ride back to the North Pole via one of our resident beavers. This was my entry last year in Baby Rabies' first ever Inappropriate Elf on a Shelf Contest and sadly I came in just outside the Top Ten with 207 votes.

My consolation prize was 'meeting' the hilariously talented Bearded Iris, whose name isn't even Iris and she doesn't have a beard! Liar, Liar, pants on fire! J/K . . . a little.

Happy Anniversary, Beautiful! Mazel Tov, Salute, Sláinte and Na Zdrowej all rolled into one!

This year, in keeping with the beaver theme, Tank . . . well just have a look yourself.

So many beavers so little time!

It appears that Tank's French is a little rusty, as he misunderstood the meaning of ménage à trois. Alas, all is well, because if a stuffed beaver is a happy beaver, then three stuffed beavers must be ecstasy. They're grinning from ear to ear and Tank looks quite satisfied as well!

Click that there elf up there to vote for me in Baby Rabies' Second Annual Inappropriate Elf Contest.
I'm entry #65.

Voting begins December 7th and runs through Dec 18th, you can vote once per day!

How Mema Saves the Day or 10 Easy Steps for Stuffed Animal Repair

This weekend we faced a horrible tragedy. TOF's beloved Army Dog was viciously attacked by Grissom, Augie Dawg's big oaf of a dog. The boy was grief stricken to the point of threatening to send Grissom to the Animal Control. Army Dog was grossly disfigured in the attack and TOF was sure he could never be fixed.

Fortunately, this Mema is a highly talented stuffed animal surgeon! Doc McStuffins could take lessons from me.

With the help of some 'Christmas Magic' I was able to repair Army Dog and save the day!

For those times when 'Christmas Magic' won't help, I've included some super easy eye transplant tips below.

  1. Head to your nearest thrift store. Preferably on 1/2 price day.
  2. Proceed directly to the stuffed animal display. DO NOT BE AFRAID! You are immune to germs and disease because this is for a good cause.
  3. Choose a suitable candidate with eyes similar to the one that needs replacing.
  4. If you've planned ahead, the organ removal can be done in the parking lot and the donor animal can be properly buried in the thrift store dumpster. (I did not plan ahead and this step was performed in my driveway.)
  5. After cleaning the eye and removing the little plastic washer behind it, Army Dog was ready for the transplant.
  6. In this case the disfiguring hole was very large, so I started off by stitching it together a bit with matching thread.
  7. I then took the 2 part eye and placed the washer behind a little bit of stuffing to keep it securely in place. I pressed the actual eye on top and snapped it shut.
  8. Next, I tightly stitched the hole closed around and under the replacement eye.
  9. Finally, Army Dog was washed and dried, to remove all dog slobber.
  10. and placed right back where I found him before anyone realized he was gone.

Make Christmas Memories With Your Santa Story

Growing up in a Polish household we didn't make a big fuss about Santa Claus, but when I had children of my own I knew I wanted to include Santa in our celebration.

My kids would write letters and circle the toys they wanted in circulars. We'd stand in line for what seemed like hours, to visit with Santa at the mall and get the annual picture taken. The visit was quick, to accommodate the thousands of children behind us.

On Christmas Eve, we'd leave cookies and milk out for Santa and carrots for the reindeer. The kids never fussed about bedtime on that special night. When they woke up way too early the next morning the cookies, milk and carrots would be gone and Santa left a thank you note and lots of presents under the tree.

Then it happened.

They stopped believing.

We still celebrated Christmas of course, but now the magic of Santa Claus was gone.

Until the grandmunchkins arrived!

Last year I was introduced to Your Santa Story and it was THE coolest Santa experience I'd ever seen.

Your Santa Story is a DVD customized especially for your kids.  No two are alike! Santa will mention each of your kids by name, as well as any pets you have. He'll mention the big milestones or special accomplishments of your kids too. This isn't a cheesy voice over in a generic video, Santa really talks to your kids! But even before you hear Santa, you'll have a quick tour of the stables where he keeps his reindeer. The video concludes with Santa telling the kids about one last present they missed and the location of that present. The look on their little faces will be priceless!

Your Santa Story can be purchased for $29.95 at www.yoursantastory.com. Quantities are limited so act quickly to start making Christmas memories for your family.

Now that you've heard about one of my Christmas memories, leave me a comment below telling me one of your favorite Christmas memories for a chance to win your very own copy of a Your Santa Story DVD. This is a super fast giveaway that ends at noon on November 30th to insure delivery in time for Christmas. Please leave an email so I can reach you in the event that you win.

Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat and The Frog Prince, Continued

On January 26, 2013 Emerald City opens two hot new titles at their Lincoln Park home, The Apollo Theatre. Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat (a Chicago premiere) and The Frog Prince, Continued (a world premiere) open on the same day and will run in repertory with each other during the winter and spring on 2013.

After a critically acclaimed premiere at The National Theatre in London, Katie Mitchell's stage adaptation of Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat is crossing the pond for its Chicago premiere at Emerald City Theatre. The Cat, Fish, and Things One and Two all come to life on stage in this script that the Evening Standard calls "faithful to the chaotic exuberance of the original, yet also winningly fresh."

Running concurrently is the world premiere of the musical adaption of The Frog Prince Continued with music and lyrics by the acclaimed Ryan Scott Oliver. Ryan Scott Oliver is a 2008 Richard Rodgers Award Winner and a 2009 Jonathan Larson Grant recipient. In addition to this commission from Emerald City, Oliver is currently writing the score for Disney Theatricals' Freaky Friday. This adaptation of the favorite John Sciezka (The Stinky Cheese Man, True Story of the Three Little Pigs) brings Ryan Scott Oliver to a Chicago theatre for development of a new script for the first time.

Tickets: Starting at $13 for kids and $16 for adults
Location: Apollo Theatre, 2540 N. Lincoln Ave.
Schedule: Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat January 26-May 19, 2013

The Frog Prince, Continued! January 25-June 2, 2013
Performance times vary. Please consult calendar at EmeraldCityTheatre.com

Dr. Suess' Cat in the Hat The Cat in the Hat is the perfect friend for a boring rainy afternoon. From games and mischief to Thing One and Thing Two, The Cat brings all sorts of trouble to this grey day--but will Sally and her brother be able to explain the mess to Mother? This Dr. Seuss classic leaps onto the stage with chaotic exuberance in this adaptation from the National Theatre in London.

As the day moves from dull to daring with the help of The Cat in the Hat, Sally and her brother share a story about Learning Responsibility. The story's theme is the main educational focus for each Emerald City Theatre show. Each production seeks to access a life skill that is relevant to early learners and their grownups. A preshow activity in the lobby and the unique Grown-up Guide in every production's Playbill let families connect with the show and the story's Theme throughout their experience. Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat will explore what it means to be responsible when others are making poor decisions.

About The Frog Prince, Continued When "happily ever after" isn't what he expected, The Frog Prince heads out for a new adventure. While searching for his true amphibian self, he meets witches from Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, and Cinderella's Fairy Godmother. This musical tour through the enchanted forest is an Emerald City world premiere.

While adventuring through the fairy tale kingdom, the royal family will share a story about Building Self-Esteem. The Frog Prince, Continued will explore what it is like to find out what it truly means to "be yourself" and be unafraid of who you are meant to be.

The Heart of Christmas

Image Entertainment's release of The Heart of Christmas is the heartbreaking film about a family faced with losing their child and their quest to give him one last Christmas. Based on the inspiring true story that gained national attention, The Heart of Christmas boasts a stellar cast that includes Candace Cameron Bure (“Make It or Break It,” “Full House”), Jeanne Nielson (Faith Like Potatoes), George Newbern (Father of the Bride), and Erin Bethea (Fireproof). The film recently received an Emmy® nomination for Outstanding Lyrics and Music for its title song, composed and performed by Grammy®-nominated singer/songwriter, Matthew West, who is also featured in the film.

Dax Ryan Locke, born to Julie and Austin Locke on June 26, 2007, was diagnosed with AML M7, a rare form of leukemia, when he was 13 months old.

The Heart of Christmas is told in flashback from the perspective of Megan (Candace Cameron Bure), a successful businesswoman, wife and mother of two, the storyline unfolds when her commitment to faith and family is renewed after reading the blog of Julie Locke, (http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/daxlocke), the online journal that Julie kept after Dax was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

Through Megan's narrative, we are introduced to Dax's father Austin (Eric Beck), who is deeply concerned about Dax's prognosis; the type of cancer has poor survival rates in children Dax's age. Determined to give Dax one last Christmas, Austin Locke surprises Julie and Dax with a Christmas tree- even though it's October. The neighbors quickly catch on and surprise the Locke's by showing up at their home to give Dax, his family and the community a magical night to remember.

This is a perfect movie to watch while recovering from your turkey and stuffing hangover on Thanksgiving night.  It will tug at your heart and make you hug your kids just a little bit harder at bedtime.

Disney On Ice: Treasure Trove – A Review

Once again Disney on Ice did not disappoint even the very discriminating TC, who spent his last evening of being 2 mesmerized by the performance unfolding in front of him.  He bopped clapped and cheered on the action along with his little buddy A and A's sister Princess Poops A Lot.

The show started out with an appearance from the Incredibles and Disney skaters encouraging everyone to get up and groove.  I honestly don't think we can stress the importance of exercise often enough and I'm glad Disney thought enough of it to add it to the show.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Disney on Ice added Alice in Wonderland to the show.  I don't think I've ever seen Alice in their productions before.  I especially enjoyed the life sized, two sided playing cards-which I could not figure out were skating forward or backwards.

The skating is always so graceful and beautiful to watch.  My favorite routine was definitely Aladdin.  From all the deep royal colors of the costumes and veils, to the huge skating elephant and the magic flying carpet.  It made me feel as if I was transported, through the magic of Disney of course, directly to Agrabah.

There was plenty more in the nearly 2 hour long show, but you'll just have to go see it for yourself.

Disney On Ice presents Treasure Trove is at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont through September 16. Evening shows are scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday there is also an 11:30 a.m. and a 3:30 p.m. performance. The Sunday 7 p.m. show will be performed in Spanish. Ticket prices are $13, $20 and $25, with some $50 VIP and $70 Front Row seats. Visit ticketmaster.com to see what tickets are still available and be sure to use code MOM to save 20% off of your ticket purchase.

Disclaimer:  I was provided complimentary tickets for myself and my family, however all opinions are my own.

Emerald City Theatre Presents - Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical

Emerald City Theatre continues its 17th season with the opening of Mo Willems' Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical adapted from the celebrated picture book by the author himself. Knuffle Bunny was adapted by The Kennedy Center and will make its Chicago premiere at Emerald City. It will play at the Apollo Theatre, located at 2540 N. Lincoln Ave., from October 6-January 6, 2013. Tickets: Starting at $13 for kids and $16 for adults

In a world where a trip to the Laundromat threatens to separate Trixie from her beloved bunny, a girl needs a hero to help - Dad. Can Trixie's parents break the code in time to rescue Knuffle Bunny? This nationally acclaimed musical written by Mo Willems brings a small heroine with big problems to the Emerald City stage.

After the great success of Emerald City's adaption of Mo Willems' Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, the company is excited to return to the author's canon. Mo Willems is a three-time Caldecott Honor-winning Dinosaur (for Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, Knuffle Bunny, and Knuffle Bunny Too). He also won two Geisel Medals for There Is a Bird on Your Head! and Are You Ready to Play Outside?, and a Geisel Honor for We Are in a Book! His books are perennial New York Times bestsellers, including Knuffle Bunny Free and Hooray for Amanda & Her Alligator! Before he turned to making picture books, Mo was a writer and animator on Sesame Street, where he won six Emmys.

While a family errand goes unexpectedly wrong, Trixie will share a story about trusting family and friends. This theme serves as the main educational focus for the production accessing a life skill that is relevant to early learners and their grownups. A preshow activity in the lobby and the unique Parent Guide in every production's Playbill let families connect with the show and the story's Theme throughout their experience. Knuffle Bunny will explore what it means to be trustworthy and reliable for the people who matter most.

CoolSculpting Better Breakfast Challenge

The older I get, not only is it harder to lose weight, it's almost impossible to lose that stubborn fat!  Muffin top, love handles, belly paunch...yep I've got em.  And yep, I hate em!  I'm also not very enthused about spending 23 1/2 hours a day working out to get rid of them.  This interesting new procedure gives me some hope and brings new meaning to the phrase 'freezing my butt off!'

CoolSculpting is the first patented non-invasive, clinically proven procedure to selectively reduce fat layers in problem areas using a patented cooling technology. It is a safe procedure cleared by the FDA that gently cools unwanted fat cells in the body to induce a natural, controlled elimination of fat cells. This reduces bulges in treated areas of the body without harming surrounding tissue.

During the CoolSculpting procedure, a non-invasive applicator delivers precisely controlled cooling to the treatment area to specifically target underlying fat, leaving surface skin tissue unaffected. When fat cells are exposed to extreme cold, it triggers a process of natural removal, which gradually reduces the thickness of the fat layer. The result is a visible reduction in fat bulges.

  • It involves no needles, surgery or downtime. - Since the CoolSculpting procedure is non-invasive, patients can resume daily activities including work and exercise, immediately following treatment
  • It’s comfortable. - CoolSculpting patients can sit or lie comfortably and read, work on their laptop or even nap during the procedure. The procedure is performed in a medical office, under the supervision of a physician specializing in cosmetic procedures.
  • It’s convenient. - Procedures last about one to two hours, so treatment can easily be performed during a lunch hour or without major disruption to the day
  • The results are dramatic. - Patients can expect and average 20% reduction of fat in the treated areas in as soon as four weeks following treatment.

In honor of September being Better Breakfast month, CoolSculpting is hosting a food photo contest on their Facebook page.  Entrants are asked to submit a photo of a healthy breakfast they are eating or have created for a chance to win an iPad or three runner up prizes for $100 AMEX gift cards. Deadline to enter is 8/31.  For complete rules please visit the Facebook page.

Big Fish Games Zuma Deluxe - Giveaway

If you're a fan of PC games, I think I have found one that you'll enjoy!

Big Fish Games "Zuma Deluxe"

Like most Marble Popper Games, Zuma Deluxe is easy to learn. Instead of the typical square grid of marbles to eliminate, Zuma Deluxe features a rotating frog, that spits out colored balls you can aim in any direction. When a ball makes contact with two or more like-colored balls, they all disappear and the remaining balls move together to close the gap. Sometimes you get a power-up ball so that you can shoot faster or slow down. The goal is to prevent the colored balls from reaching the pit at the end of the maze. It starts out simple and gets increasingly more difficult to challenge your reflexes.

Big Fish Games has a huge selection of downloadable games and the best thing about them is that you can preview the game for one hour free of charge before committing to buy. That way you're not stuck with something that you really don't care for.

Big Fish would like to offer 2 of my readers a full version of one of these great games:
  • Bejeweled 2
  • Deluxe Burger Shop 2
  • Gardenscapes
  • Plants vs. Zombies
  • Zuma Deluxe
