A Letter to My Grandson on His 1st Day of Preschool

My Dearest TOF,

Today, Tuesday August 26th, we reach a new and very important milestone in your life. From this day on, education outside of home becomes a part of your daily life.

Your confidence when you boarded the yellow school bus this morning assures me that we've prepared you well for this big day. Your enthusiasm was shining brightly on this cool and rainy August morning as I forced the lump in my throat to stay still and held back the tears welling up in my eyes.

The bus was late and you passed the time by splashing happily in the puddles on the sidewalk. You looked so handsome in your new school clothes and new shoes. Proudly wearing your Cubs' cap and carrying a Spiderman backpack.

I can't believe how quickly these 3 1/2 years have flown by. Pa and I were there the day you were born and we take our role as your grandparents very seriously. We don't know everything and neither will you, but that's OK.

I love that you ask "Why?" repeatedly and hope that you continue to ask questions and have a desire to learn new things.

You will meet new friends at school and there may be people who are different from you. I want you to always practice your patience and tolerance and acceptance. Always smile and be happy.

You will stumble, but remember that you have many people that love you. We will always help you up and we will always encourage you to keep trying.

Be open to learn what this big world has to offer.

God bless you as you begin your new and exciting adventure. May the road ahead always lead you to greater knowledge. May your life bring you happiness, laughter and love.

I love you for always,

Mema

I like cottage cheese with salsa and chili powder and tortilla chips. Maybe not so much low calorie unless you make your own chips though. I'm a follower of your twitter and blog!

Weekend Update: Relaxation Was a SLIGHT Fail

Just popping in for a quick update, head over here to enter if you haven't already.

As you know Saturday was National Relaxation Day, as if I need an excuse to kick back and relax. We packed up the Vue and headed to Wrigley to watch the Cubs actually beat the Pirates and enjoy some of the AIR part of the Air and Water Show. Just about as perfect as any day could be in my book. Weather was good, company was great. Relaxation success.

Then came Sunday. Similar scenario except for the part where a little over 1/2 way into the city TOF is breathing more rapidly than normal. He's a little congested, seasonal allergies, we figured he'd be fine when his Claritin kicked in. Relax.

WRONG!

The game was rain delayed before it even started. TOF fell asleep and as he lay on my lap his little chest was heaving laboriously. This became serious business when my dear Whynot said it's time to leave a Cub game and stop at the ER on the way home.

Relaxation-Slight Fail. Kick in stress hormones.

FIVE HOURS in that ER, a chest X-ray, two nasal swabs, a throat swab, 2 allebuterol breathing treatments and an oral steroid later we are on our way home with 2 prescriptions and a much happier although extremely hyper little boy.

He's home resting today and I'm off to tackle some long overdue household chores. Wish me luck or send help!

I Need a Timeout

Sorry for the late notice, but tomorrow August 15th, is National Relaxation Day.

Did you forget how to relax?

Turn off the TV, the computer and your cell phone and focus on YOU. Get engrossed in a book, listen to music. Consider heading out in the sunshine and resting. Just take a chair into your backyard and sit, relax and breathe.

Life is short, stop operating in "stress mode." It doesn't have to be huge, just a few minutes at a time. Go for a walk, take a nap, work in your garden. Eat some chocolate and skip the guilt.

I'm spending my time out at Wrigley Field, where I won't worry about Jim Hendry's crappy lineup and instead enjoy the Air and Water Show. But I may color my hair before I go, to cover all the grays created by stress.

Obama-Care 101

A little over two years ago I was part of an elite group known as "The Insured of America." We had excellent full coverage insurance through Teamsters which included dental AND vision for about the same cost to us monthly as a week's worth of Venti Lattes. Then inappropriately on April Fool's Day came the news that the mom and pop trucking company was shutting down after over 50 years in existence.

We spent the next 30 "covered" days scrambling to get our medical affairs in order. Begging Drs to write new prescriptions for generic equivalents to be redeemed at Walmart for $4. Squeezing in office visits and medical tests where we could. Dentists, optometrists and lab visits, such were our days that April.

Cobra was available but unaffordable and even that only covered 18 months. We're too young for Medicare, too "wealthy" for Medicaid and too "poor" to pay out of pocket for a decent private medical plan. That's when the crap shoot began, and I still pray, please let's not roll snakes eyes.

So as one of millions of Americans without health insurance, I'm very interested in learning more about this new hot topic health reform plan. The comments I have read so far have been mostly negative and I have no time to read and comprehend all 1018 pages of the proposed plan. I want to hear both the pros and cons. Therefore as today's assignment, I'm inviting my readers to submit a guest post regarding this very important issue OR send me links to posts you've written or come across in the Blogosphere. I'll feature as many as possible here on The Avenue between now and Wednesday August 12th.

Class dismissed. Go spread the word. And as always anyone with knowledge of a full time logistics opening with benefits is encouraged to contact me.
